Objective:
Focusing on the theme “Connecting Past to Present”, this interactive multi-layered map will allow the visitors of Fort York National Historic Site to visualize what the museum looked like at different parts in its history. This multi post frame will show the land before the historic site, Fort York in 1793, and finally what the museum looks like today.
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to challenge the audience’s thoughts on how Fort York got to where it is today. To think about its history and how there may be another side of the story left untold. To think about the city of Toronto’s development over the years and how Fort York has been affected by these growing changes.
Guiding Questions for the audience:
● Whose land was this when they built the battle ground?
● Who built it?
● How do the stories of the Battle of York differ depending on the perspectives of the British, American, and Indigenous participants?
● In what ways did Fort York influence the development of the surrounding community and the city of Toronto as it transitioned from a military outpost to a growing urban center?
Overview/Description:
Located at Fort York Historic Site by the East Gate (Point 12 on Fort York Site Map) there will be an installment of three rectangular frames mounted on wood posts overlooking the land. The first post will show the area of Fort York before it was ever built; Showing flat land and the shores of Lake Ontario while remaining about 60% opaque so that the city is still visible through the image. The second post will show Fort York in 1793 upon first being built; showing the same opaque material covering only the skyline, eliminating the modern buildings of Toronto. The third and last post will be simply a rectangle made from wood with no inner frame overlooking the site; this will show Fort York as it is currently in that moment.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this project is not limited to anyone. Children and students may choose to interact with this installment just as much as seniors or other members of the community. This project is open to all who visit Fort York Site, however, the questions that may be provoked when looking at the project will differ depending on who is viewing it.
Take- Home Resource
Objective:
Following the visit through Fort York Historic Site and viewing the three posts showing the Past and Present of the Battle grounds, viewers have the option to grab a Take-Home Resource in hopes to further their learning and understanding.
Description:
A fun activity sheet titled “The Future Fort York” where visitors of the site can challenge the ideas of the future by drawing or creating their idea of what Fort York will look like 50 Years from now. After the drawing is complete, visitors have the opportunity to send it to the Fort York email and from there it will be added to a new tab on the Fort York website titled “Future Fort York”.
Distribution Plan:
The activity sheet will be displayed in the Fort York Visitor Centre (Point 1 on the map). Visitors to the site are encouraged to take the free resource and create their idea of the Future Fort for a chance to have it displayed on the official Fort York website.
